What are the advantages of Silvagen?

Silvagen is a form of colloidal silver that has been shown to be significantly more effective (by tests at the Brigham Young Microbiology Laboratory) than other brands of colloidal silver that were tested. This is of vital importance. Just because something is colloidal silver does NOT guarantee that it has significant biological effectiveness.

There have been many claims concerning the beneficial powers of silver solutions. An article published in The Northern Miner ("Medicinal Silver," May 18, 1998) states that when a group of AIDS patients were given just one dose of polyvalent silver (metallic plus ionic at approximately 40 parts per million ("ppm") silver), their white blood cell count increased by between 10% and 350%. The article noted: . . . the single treatment appeared to prolong the lives of the eight patients by as much as three years.

In a test reported by the National Virology Laboratory of Israel, a polyvalent silver solution at a concentration as low as 20 ppm was inserted into cultured HIV infected cells, resulting in a kill rate of 98.4%. Encouraged by these results, the Kaplan Hospital, also in Israel, conducted a study of laboratory mice infected with murine AIDS. A single dose of 40 ppm of polyvalent silver reportedly resulted in an effective cure on the laboratory mice.

J. Cardot, M.D. has published a letter in which he states that he has successfully treated more than 50 cases of viral pneumonia with multivalent silver solution. He also states that he has had similar success with other infections, including ear infections in children, infectious fibromyalgia, Sjorgen's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis with synovial fluid infections, systemic candida albicans, staph infections, gingivitis, the Lyme disease spirochete, HIV, ringworm, psoriasis, genital herpes, and herpes zoster. Manfred Bayer, M.D. and Margaret Bayer Ph.D. (1996) reported that the growth rate of the spirochete, borrelia borgdorferelli (Lyme disease) in vitro is visibly inhibited by a mild silver protein at concentrations of 2 to 10 ppm.

Recently, thorough and focused studies (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration tests and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration tests) were completed under the direction of Dr. R. Leavitt, Professor of Molecular Biology and Microbiology at Brigham Young University and David Revelli, a microbiologist. This study was undertaken to assess the ability of Silvagen to kill and/or inhibit a wide variety of deadly bacteria. In assessing the results of the study, Dr. Leavitt noted: "The following results suggest that this silver solution (Silvagen) is a broad spectrum antimicrobial agent. It is able to effectively stop the growth of and in fact, kill a large variety of bacteria... To date there are no bacteria tested that... (this) product has not killed".


How does Silvagen work?

The Northern Miner article (May 18, 1998) claims: "Single-charged silver replaces hydrogen atoms, which supply energy to bacteria and extra-cellular viruses." Because all living organisms need a supply of energy to live, blocking that energy supply quickly kills bacteria and reduces viruses to an inert state. In a number of reported laboratory tests, the bacteria were killed within minutes of exposure to the silver solutions.

This is extremely important, primarily because silver does not target a specific mechanism that only a few bacteria use to support themselves. Because it involves a far more general mechanism, it is effective against a much wider range of bacteria and viruses, perhaps all of them. An article in Science Digest (March 1978, p.57) states: "An antibiotic kills perhaps a halfdozen different disease organisms, but silver kills some 650. Resistant strains fail to develop... Even tiny amounts of silver wipe out huge quantities of disease organisms in water... After testing 23 methods of purifying water, NASA selected a silver system for the space shuttle."

Because silver is so broad spectrum a bactericide, it does not generate strains of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. This may be one of the most significant features of silver. Over the past several decades the use of antibiotics has given rise to bacteria that are immune to those antibiotics. Bacteria and viruses multiply thousands of times faster than larger organisms. (Bacteria can reproduce every roughly 20 minutes, 500,000 times as often as humans.) For this reason, they generate more mutations. If a colony of bacteria is treated with an antibiotic that kills nearly all of the bacteria, but fails to kill just a few of the mutants, it will be the surviving mutants that multiply and pass on their immunity to new colonies of that bacterium.

The situation is even worse. Drug resistant genes occur in plasmids, circular bits of DNA that are not attached to bacterial chromosomes. Because plasmids "float," they can more readily be passed from one bacterium to another. In this manner bacteria can exchange their resistance to drugs. Even harmless bacteria can pass on their drug resistance to dangerous microbes.


What about toxicity or negative side-effects of Silvagen?

This is a reasonable question. For silver is a heavy metal, and most heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic) are toxic. In addition, a number of silver compounds are toxic. We do not have the advantage of the batteries of tests demanded by the FDA that would establish beyond doubt the non-toxicity of colloidal silver. However, there are many individuals who have taken many thousands of times the normal dose. Old silver solutions contained up to 300,000 ppm silver. Many individuals took upwards of one ounce per day. (One ounce of 300,000 ppm silver corresponds to 1,000 quarts per day of 10 ppm silver. It is physically impossible to drink that much.) A few people who took high concentrations of silver salts developed a condition called argyria, in which their skins, and even their teeth, take on a grayish hue. However, argyria does not appear to be debilitating or life-threatening. We do not have any evidence of any individuals who have taken 10 ppm colloidal silver (or even much higher concentrations of colloidal silver) developing argyria, and believe it unlikely that they would at such low levels of silver intake.

In addition to this historical evidence, several recent tests have been conducted on the toxicity of Silvagen. One test was conducted by NAMSA, an international medical testing laboratory, using a 22 ppm concentration of Silvagen. The test evaluated this solution for oral toxicity by the standards of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) Regulations, 16CPR 1500. The laboratory gave a single dose of 5 grams per kilogram of body weight to ten rats. (This corresponds to a 200-pound person consuming four 8-ounce bottles of 10 ppm of Silvagen at one time, 100-200 times the standard dose.) The rats were then observed for two weeks for signs of toxicity. The study concluded: "Under the conditions of this study, there was no mortality or significant evidence of toxicity observed in the rats. The test article would not be considered toxic at a dose of 5 g/kg by the oral route in the rat."

In a second, independent, study, Roger J. Altman, Ph.D. consumed from 1 mg to 2.34 mg of silver in colloidal solution per day every day (many times the recommended dose) for nearly six months in the context of an in depth study of the body's ability to eliminate the silver. Altman reported: "Ingestion of properly prepared colloidal silver does not result in silver accumulation in the body. There is no evidence that silver deposits significantly in hair or fingernails and, in fact, the data support the conclusion that after taking more than 2 mg of colloidal silver per day for several months, silver seems to be purged from the body (mostly through urine) at about the same rate at which it is consumed. Furthermore, upon ceasing colloidal silver intake, it appears that at least 80% of the residual silver residing in the body tissue will be purged in about 3 months. Even this relatively short residence time could be reduced by a factor of 3 if several liters of water are consumed daily."

By contrast, "Untoward toxic effects of antibiotics are well known; they range from death from anaphylaxis or aplastic anemia with penicillin and chloramphenicol, respectively, to severe diarrhea from lincosamides, rash from ampicillin, nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity from the aminoglycosides, and bleeding disorders with some of the new betalactam antibiotics.(Calvin Kunin, "Problems in Antibiotic Usage" in Mandell, Douglas, and Bennett (eds.) Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases) "It would be comforting to believe that ill-effects of antibiotics are always either trivial or rare. But that's not what the textbooks say. It would also be comforting to believe that antibiotics cause ill-effects only when they are overused and abused. But that's not true either." (G. Cannon, Superbug: Nature's Revenge).

For most antibiotics have associated side effects, some of which can be serious. Also, because they target specific mechanisms or sites that can be avoided by mutations, they tend to generate strains of microbes that are resistant to that antibiotic. Many doctors are hesitant to prescribe antibiotics even for well-documented infections.

In contrast to antibiotics, tests on Silvagen have not shown any negative side effects. Even in the case of the old silver solutions, which contained 5,000 to 30,000 times as much silver as current 10ppm concentrations, there are no records of health endangering side effects. We have searched many databases to find even solitary reports of such side effects associated with colloidal silver, but have not been able to find even a single significant instance. (We noted above that a few individuals who have consumed massive quantities of silver salts have developed argyria, a condition in which one's skin and subcutaneous layers turn gray or blue-gray. However, no deleterious health effects have been associated with argyria.)

Within this context, one should note that we do not have studies on the effects of very long-term use of colloidal silver, although there are many people who have taken large quantities (8-16 ounces per day at 1050 ppm, 10 to 100 times the recommended usage) for eight years or more and report no adverse effects. The fact that so much greater quantities of colloidal silver were taken for so long a time without producing any negative side effects provides a large margin of safety to those who take just the recommended dose.

In addition to the evidence indicating that there are no negative physiological side effects, it appears that even when individuals have consumed relatively large quantities of silver solution, they have not developed a psychological dependence or addiction.

Finally, because Silvagen has so broad an anti-bacterial mechanism, there is far less danger that it will encourage the development of strains of resistant bacteria. For that reason it is safer for both the individual and the community.

In assessing both the value and the potential negatives of colloidal silver it is essential to stress how important it is that the solution be well prepared. If the bio-availability is too low or the concentration is too low, then the solution will be less effective and may fail to kill the bacteria that a more bio-available solution would kill. If certain salts are introduced into the solution, it could cause Argyria. Quality control is essential. Not only must the silver be very pure, but great care must be taken to control the pH, the quantity of total dissolved solids, the portion of the solution that is truly colloidal, as opposed to ionic, the electric charge of the solution, and the particle size of the silver. Not all colloidal silver products have the same efficacy or the same safety.


If Silvagen & colloidal silver is so effective, why aren't drug companies selling it?

The medical establishment is driven largely by considerations of profitability. Drug companies spend many millions of dollars each year on research in the hope that they will discover a drug that may produce billions of dollars in profit. Their ideal is finding a drug that has a large market (Rogaine, Viagra) that cannot be readily duplicated in "me-too" drugs by other companies. The potential for massive profit justifies the expense of research and development.

Colloidal silver fits part of this picture. It could serve a very large market. But this product fails to fit the rest of the picture. From the perspective of a drug company, this is not a drug. It is not a question of finding the right macromolecule with a highly specific set of properties. Rather, it is a question of developing a manufacturing process that produces a high quality colloidal solution of a common element. This is not their primary area of expertise.

Actually, the economic situation is even worse for a drug company. For colloidal silver might replace a highly profitable drug and so negatively impact the profits of the drug company. As one example, some doctors have claimed to successfully treat certain kinds of hepatitis with colloidal silver. The standard allopathic treatment, the anti-metabolite Interferon-A coupled with Ribavirin, costs more than $1,000 per month (and often has debilitating short-term side effects and works for only about 40% of patients with Hepatitis C). Suppose colloidal silver were at least as effective as this treatment. Then the replacement of Interferon and Ribavirin by colloidal silver - good for those suffering from hepatitis - would be bad for the profits of the drug companies. A large drug company has spent millions of dollars developing a vaccine/treatment for Lyme disease. Their product appears to be effective, although there is a worry that it might cause an incurable arthritis in as many as 30% of cases. The success of colloidal silver in treating Lyme disease would render that new drug valueless. The worldwide market for antibiotics is now $40 billion per year. In pursuing colloidal silver, there would be more economic risk than reward for a drug company.

Given the nature of our economic system, it is unrealistic to think that drug companies would aggressively seek to develop low-margined colloidal silver to replace high-margined drugs. Such an action would violate their fiduciary duty to shareholders. For this reason, it is likely that the drug companies will tend to react defensively to products such as colloidal silver.

Where there is potential gain and little threat to profits, drug and hospital supply companies appear to be aware of the benefits of silver. Companies make silver plated Foley catheters to reduce the risk of urinary tract infections. Silver-containing bandages with a slow release technology are used to provide long-lasting bactericidal action. V A hospitals now mandate the use of silver solution in conjunction with certain procedures. This supports the claim that it is primarily for economic reasons that the major drug companies have not pursued colloidal silver.


Additional Silvagen Information

Silvagen is non-toxic and yet lethal to bacteria, yeasts and some viruses. Silvagen is patented, and has been tested in thousands of tests against some of the deadliest bacteria that exist on the planet, and has been proven to easily kill every single bacteria tested so far. Numerous tests at major US universities and commercial labs like: UC Davis, Kansas State, Bringham Young University, IIT, and many other independent laboratories and universities, have proven the effectiveness of the product in killing thousands of strains of problematic bacteria like; Staph, TB, Strep, E-coli, Salmonella, a number of yeasts, and even the Anthrax spore.

A toxicology study was performed on Silvagen by an independent laboratory. The test, called an LD-50 test, was performed in accordance with the guidelines of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) Regulations, 16 CFR 2500. In the test work, Silvagen was given to a number of both male and female test animals. The amount of Silvagen given to the animals was 5g/kg of 22 ppm solution, or the equivalent of a 200-pound man taking 192 teaspoons or about 8 full 4ounce bottles of the 10 ppm solution at one time (the normal adult dosage is one teaspoon per day). As a result of the test work, the independent laboratory made the following conclusion. Under the conditions of this study, there was no mortality or significant evidence of toxicity observed in the rats. The test article (Silvagen) would not be considered toxic at a dose of 5g/kg by oral route in the rat.

Numerous independent hospitals, universities and private laboratories have been, and currently are, doing work on Silvagen as an antibiotic alternative and as a safe, external bacteria killing agent. Human tests for both external and internal usage are currently underway. Test work completes to date includes: antibiotic test comparisons; thousands of tests against different kinds of bacteria; yeast elimination work; safety and toxicity data; independent tests against other, similar silver products; water treatment tests, etc.

Silvagen has been approved by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) as a non-toxic, natural disinfectant. In EPA testing, 1600 individual tests were completed against 540 strains of bacteria at the DILUTED 4.4 ppm level, in just 15 minutes of contact time or less.

Note: There are many different colloidal silver products on the market ... some as high as 500-1000 ppm. We have proven that Silvagen is effective against all of these strains of bacteria at a strength as low as 2.5 ppm. If a silver has to be 1000 ppm to be effective, maybe it isn't effective or safe at all.
